6 “Adults Only” Sex Mistakes to Never Make on a Cruise

If you’re headed on a cruise, odds are that you’re traveling with your partner. And if that’s the case, then it’s almost sure that romance will be a part of your vacation.

You certainly aren’t alone. There’s something universal about being in the tropics, having that relaxed vacation mindset, alcohol flowing, and wearing clothes that likely reveal a little more than usual that just puts people in the mood.

And yes, sex is happening on the ship. But with those romantic trysts, there are also some mistakes that can be made that you want to absolutely avoid.

Getting Down When You First Find Your Room

It can be inviting to get the cruise started off on the right foot, but distractions and interruptions are constant the first few hours on the ship.

Maybe you want to get the vacation started early… as in getting busy your first few hours on the ship. If that’s the case, yes, you can get some romance in, but you should know that it can become an awkward mistake.

Here’s the deal: The first few hours on the ship are unlike any other time. It’s frankly when you have the most foot traffic in the hallways. People are finding their cabins, bags are being delivered to staterooms, and room stewards are making their rounds to introduce themselves to passengers.

In other words, at best if you’re getting down you’re going to hear people’s conversations as they walk up and down the hall. At worst, you’re going to be in the middle of things and hear a knock on the door as the room steward wants to say hello before the cruise starts.

If you wait until after the ship sets sail, then you’re in the clear as things quiet down dramatically in the hallway.

Being Too Loud (But You Don’t Have to Be Silent)

Your proximity to other passengers means that keeping the sounds levels down is a nice thing to do.

Some people can be a little more… ahem… vocal… when it comes to their lovemaking. If that’s you (or your significant other) then you should at least try to keep it down while on the cruise ship.

First the good news: your cabin is fairly soundproof. So if you’re having a conversation or have the TV on, you aren’t going to disturb your neighbor. If, however, you’re giving a full-throated shriek or a loud grunt? It’s going to be heard.

Depending on your cabin location, you’ll have two rooms on either side of you, one across the hall, one above you and one below you. That’s a lot of people that could hear something if you decide to turn up the volume on a late-night session.

For everyone’s sake, just keep the noise to a manageable level.

Thinking the Balcony Is Completely Private

Your balcony has a partition, but it’s far from being sealed off from others.

Chances are that you booked a balcony cabin. These cabins are great in that they give you your own outdoor space where you can take in views of the ocean, get fresh air, and for at least some people, have a romantic time.

Should you decide that you want to get a little action on your balcony, there’s some definite mistakes you want to avoid. Specifically, while it’s often called your own private balcony, it’s anything but private.

Cruise ship balconies are rather small, which means your neighbors won’t be far away if they come out while you’re having a go. And given that it’s outside, anything and everything can be heard.

More than that, the balconies have partitions between them, but these partitions have space on the sides, bottom, and tops. It could be that someone next to you could get an eyeful, even if they aren’t trying.

Leaving Private Things Out in the Room

If you brought something to spice up your bedroom activities, just be sure to put it away when not in use.

I mentioned earlier about the romantic feel on a cruise and how it might be due to wearing clothes that are more revealing. Well, some people bring even spicier outfits for the cabin to keep things interesting. Still others might bring a “marital aid” to add to the fun.

All this is fine and perfectly allowed on a cruise ship (except for handcuffs… those aren’t allowed for security purposes). So if you want to bring something for the bedroom, by all means do it.

But you should know that other people will be in your cabin. Specifically, your room steward will come in 1-2 times a day to tidy up while you’re out and about. For that reason, it’s a mistake to leave these private items out in the room. It can lead to an awkward moment the next time you see the room steward in the hall.

A One-Night Stand With Someone You Don’t Want to See Again

Maybe you are traveling on your cruise without a partner and looking to hook up. You should know that most people seem to travel as couples, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find someone else interested in a tryst.

But one mistake you should avoid is hooking up with someone you’re not willing to see the entire cruise.

There can be upwards of 6,000 people on a cruise ship, but you’ll find that you often see the same passengers again and again. In that way, it can feel like a small town.

So if there’s someone that you get with but then don’t want to see again… well, let’s just say you’re going to do a lot of looking over your shoulder.

Getting Frisky Outside the Room

Cameras cover public spaces on the ship, so romance outside of the room is a bad idea.

For most people, making romance inside the cabin (or on the balcony) is plenty for them. But there are some folks that look to something a little more risqué to get their kicks.

So it might be that passengers think about making love outside of the room, perhaps in a secluded spot on a public deck where people aren’t around. That’s a mistake.

First, even if it seems like there is no one around, you don’t know who might be coming around the corner. And on a cruise ship, that could even mean kids.

On top of that, cruise ships have cameras everywhere in public spaces. There’s a good chance that even if no one physically sees you, the camera caught it. In other words, keep it in the cabin.
