Norwegian Cruise Line is officially the owner of the world’s newest cruise ship. The cruise line announced today that it has taken delivery of its newest vessel — Norwegian Luna — from shipbuilder Fincantieri in Marghera, Italy.

“We are thrilled to welcome Norwegian Luna to our fleet and to welcome our first guests aboard next week,” said Marc Kazlauskas, president of Norwegian Cruise Line. “This ship represents the continued evolution of our vision and the incredible work behind an award-winning class of ships.”
Luna is a sister ship to Aqua and is the second ship in NCL’s” Prima Plus” class — an evolution of the original Prima class. With the addition, Luna becomes the 21st vessel in the Norwegian fleet.
A Perfect Size for Those Tired of “Mega Ships” While Still Wanting Lots to See and Do
Coming in at 156,000 gross tons with capacity for 3,565 passengers across more than 1,800 staterooms, Luna is a step up in size from Norwegian Prima and Viva while still staying smaller than some of the massive ships you’ll find from other lines.
That smaller-but-elevated approach continues to be a deliberate choice for NCL. Though larger ships are coming in the future, NCL has taken an unusual move in the industry to focus more on luxury than just increasing size.
Still, Luna is no slouch when it comes to what’s onboard the (relatively) smaller package. The ship will offer passengers 17 dining options, 18 bars and lounges, and a lineup of onboard experiences that range from family fun to adults-only retreats.
Speaking of family fun, Luna introduces a few new attractions that cruisers haven’t seen before on NCL ships. The Moon Climber is a brand-new multi-level outdoor obstacle course, while the Luna Midway brings a carnival-style amusement park area to the open deck. The Aqua Slidecoaster, a hybrid waterslide and rollercoaster that’s exclusive to NCL, also makes its return.
For those who prefer something a little more low-key, there’s the Vibe Beach Club for adults and the always-popular Mandara Spa.
Entertainment-wise, Norwegian Luna will feature “Elton: A Celebration of Elton John” in the theater. Another offering is “HIKO: Innovation Meets Wonder,” which the cruise line says is a “multimedia show featuring innovative design, cirque-style acrobatics, and contemporary dance.”
Of course, anyone that’s sailed NCL’s newer ships knows that the cruise line has put a bigger focus on luxury than many rivals. And for those who want a high-end cruise, The Haven is featured prominently. NCL’s “ship-within-a-ship” concept offers larger staterooms, private dining, and dedicated butler and concierge service — essentially a luxury hotel tucked inside the larger vessel.
Still, having toured similar NCL ships before, you can rest assured that no matter where you are on the new Luna, you’re going to feel the luxury and style that just seems to be a step above most other mass market lines.
Setting Sail From Miami Later This Month
Despite officially being part of the fleet, it will still be a bit before the ship sails from its new home in Florida. The ship will first have a transatlantic crossing from Rome and arrive in Miami in late March, with the official christening ceremony set for March 27 at PortMiami.
From there, she’ll sail three and four-day Bahamas trips, as well as week-long Eastern Caribbean itineraries throughout the year. The ship then transitions to Western Caribbean routes beginning in November.
Looking even further ahead, Norwegian Luna is also slated to debut in New York City in April 2027, sailing Bermuda cruises.
